Before
When we first walked into Dunlin Meadow, the home felt closed off, segmented, and dark. Like many homes built in the 1980s, every room was divided by walls. The kitchen, tucked away in its own corner, lacked natural light and connection to the living and dining spaces.
The homeowners were ready for a dramatic change. They wanted:
A bright, open concept with natural flow
More sunlight and a stronger connection to their backyard
A functional layout with improved storage and upgraded appliances

The Big Changes
To accomplish the open-concept layout, we made several key changes:
1. Removing Interior Walls
The original kitchen was boxed in on all sides. We removed the dividing walls to merge the kitchen, dining, and living areas into one cohesive, light-filled space.
2. Installing a Custom Steel Beam
Taking down load-bearing walls meant we needed strong structural support. A custom-engineered steel beam now spans the heart of the home, providing strength without interrupting the open flow.
Getting the beam inside the house, however, became its own challenge. To get it safely through the front door, we temporarily removed two windows, along with portions of the siding and brick.
3. Adding Large Sliding Glass Doors
Along the back wall, we installed expansive sliding glass doors to dramatically increase natural light and create an indoor–outdoor connection.
4. Reworking Cabinetry, Appliances & Island Layout
The kitchen layout was completely reimagined, including:
A new central kitchen island with added storage and seating
Relocated appliances for improved workflow
Redesigned cabinetry placement for balance and function
The new layout feels open and so much easier to live in.
